Tsavo National Park

Amboseli National Park lies in southern Kenya, near the border with Tanzania, and covers an area of about 392 square kilometers (151 square miles). Its name comes from the Maasai word “Empusel”, meaning “salty, dusty place.”
Despite its relatively small size, Amboseli offers some of the most iconic views in Africa, with Mount Kilimanjaro—Africa’s tallest peak—towering over the park’s open plains. The snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro makes for a dramatic backdrop to the wildlife below.
Wildlife and Ecosystem
Amboseli is best known for its large herds of free-ranging elephants, many of which have been part of long-term scientific studies. These elephants often appear in photos with Kilimanjaro in the background, making them a symbol of East African safaris.
The park also features a variety of habitats, including:
Swamps and marshes fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro’s glaciers
Savannah grasslands
Woodlands
Seasonal lakes, including Lake Amboseli
